In our work, it is always amazing to see the results of a complete renovation of a property, although it has to be said that they are not all as spectacular as this one!
A labour of love of interior designer Adela Maldonado Plata and her husband David, this beautiful and historic flour mill has been transformed into an extraordinarily luxurious villa, now available for holiday rental and events.

We met up with Adela at the property to find out all about this wonderful project, in her own words…
What made you buy this property?
It was love at first sight! I have always been drawn to old houses with stories, and it’s my passion to restore them to their original glory and give them a new life, making new stories and memories. That’s what persuaded David and me to embark on this exciting project for the Mill.
The very first time that Danielle (from At Home in Andalusia) showed us the property, although we could see it was a grand old house of a hundred years or so, it was walking through its old iron gates, and discovering the many beautiful corners hiding stone walls of more than a century old, and the silence was the main selling point. At that moment, David and I, with a conspiratorial glance, knew that this house would be our new project.
Why the Lecrin Valley?
We first discovered the Valley 11 years ago, when we were looking for a place near to Granada, where we could disconnect from everyday life. We wanted to find an area of both countryside and mountain that was close to the city, but at the same time far from the daily routine and stress of modern life.
At that time, we actually bought 2 other properties, which we renovated and sold to move on to new bigger projects.
We were clear that this new project had to be in one of the small towns in the Lecrin Valley.
If I had to describe the Valley in a few words, they would be: marvellous views of the mountains and lush vegetation; an abundance of peace and tranquillity; precious memories and experiences over these last 11 years.

How were you able to see its potential?
It’s hard for me to explain it in words. I think that the ability to see or not see the possibilities of an old building goes beyond throwing down some partition walls or decorating rooms in one way or another.
You have to have a connection with the building from the first moment and be able to really see into its soul. If you have that, then everything else will fall into place.
Did you know right away what it could become?
Yes, we knew from the first moment. Despite the obvious passages of time, we could glimpse the splendour and the soul of the original house and what it could be again.
How long did it take to do the renovation?
All in all, with huge amount of effort and dedication, we managed to finish the project in just six months.
What was the main challenge?
Probably the coordination of all different tradespeople / craftsmen that have been part of the renovation. It was a bit of an undertaking in order to finish the project and open the doors of the Mill, six months after starting the works.
